The Key to Selecting the Right Virus Scanner

Every day, more and more people fall prey to computer viruses and other malware. These come in many varieties, such as software that puts ads on every webpage you view, software that commandeers your computer for sending royal decrees from his highness, the prince of Nigeria to people’s inboxes, and even the old fashioned data deleting type. Obviously, these can range from a simple inconvenience to devastating, but regardless of what type of virus you’re dealing with, you want it gone.

Free virus removal tools have their perks, namely monetary ones. However, free companies have been known to take money from certain adware creators in order to make the software not detect that adware. They need to eat somehow, right?

The key to picking the right virus protection package is judging what it can do and what the drawbacks are. You may have great anti-virus protection, but if half your processing power is being taken up constantly, you may find that you’d rather choose a different program. Many people will tell you that the pay antivirus programs are guiltier of this than the free virus scanners, but in my experience free anti-virus programs are just as guilty.

But the pay anti-virus programs are paid, and therefore impossible to try before buying? Well, maybe the ones you see on the shelf at your local retailer, but the internet has a wealth of resources that those retailers could never fit within their walls. The best way is to search for reviews of virus software packages, and from there make your decision. If you don’t like the way the program works, uninstall it before the demo expires, and try another one.

You don’t have to choose immediately, and of course the best way to not get infected with a computer virus is to stay off any of the more shady sites on the internet. However, sometimes others will use your computer and go to those porn sites or newsgroups which are notorious for viruses.

Virus protection is important, and will probably be the most important program you install on your computer. Just remember, once you’re protected, stay out of Nigeria. The prince will throw you in a work camp for sure for not letting him send his e-mails with your bandwidth.
